According to Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, declining interest rates on longer term maturities when short term interest rates are beginning to rise is a “conundrum.” (that means “riddle” or “puzzle” for those who have not studied recently for their college boards.)

The debate about a housing bubble is becoming more intense. Between World War II and 1995, housing prices have increased in line with inflation. Since that time, housing prices have increased 40 percent faster than inflation.

I certainly applaud the President on his purpose and his optimism in his State of the Union message.
But I wanted to scream at the end of his outline of domestic programs that our country does not have the resources to do what he wants. Keeping the discretionary budget growing less than the rate of inflation is not going to halve the deficit by the end of his administration.
