According to some estimates, the median single family home rose by more than 8 percent in value last year. This followed well over a 7 percent gain the year before. Indeed, housing prices have averaged an annual increase of almost 7 percent per year over the past quarter century.

I have now heard talk about a “soft” versus “hard” landing for the economy. This officially launches the cyclical worry that the economy is stalling when the economy more likely is settling to orderly growth following the typical early surge after recession.

Before political advertising begins to swamp the airwaves, I think it is a good time to review what is happening in one of the two major issues of this campaign: the economy.
A few months ago I received an e-mail from a seventh grade student who was researching whether President Bush’s policies were beneficial or hurtful to the economy. At the end of the questions raised, I was asked my political leanings.
